Tomorrow, 30th September is a sad day. From that day forth Ether books will cease to exist. Maureen Scott and the other stars that have wafted through Ether have had to accept that it is time to go.
Ether started up, with the concept of delivering short stories to your phone, way before others came along. A few big names were on board. people like Paul McCartney and Hillary Mantel saw it as a way of reaching a new generation. Sadly these people did not offer financial support and the UK publishing industry is notoriously slow to get on board with anything new. It was left to Maureen to push the dream forward and by the time things started to move her finances were all used up. New, better financed organisations stepped in and took over the market.
I jumped on the Ether bandwagon in the early days although I haven't reached the dizzy heights of Ms Mantel, i will always be grateful to Ether for the chance they gave me to reach out to a wider audience. Sadly,it is no more. I hope that the next time a book wings its way through the ether to your phone that you will take a moment to remember who started it all.
